Call me an infatuated new mom (I am!), but I’m so proud of and impressed by KR’s ability to put himself to sleep at night!!
It started almost by accident, when I created a little bedtime routine for him without even meaning to. When KR was around 3 weeks old, we found that he LOVED taking baths—that they were super relaxing for him.
So, we started giving him a bath every night before bed. I would take him potty (that’s a post for another day), give him a bath, nurse him while we read a worship story, sing and rock him a little, and then once he was snoozing pretty good in my arms, I’d lay him down in his bassinet.
In the beginning, after he realized he wasn’t being held anymore, he’d cry and fuss a little, but I found that all I needed to do was go in, stroke his head or put my hand comfortingly on his chest, give him his paci for a couple minutes, and pretty soon he was out!
After a while of being consistent with the routine, I found that once he was starting to get a bit sleepy in my arms, he’d push against my arms like he wanted to be laid down instead of held. That’s when I started putting him into his bassinet awake.
And sure enough, just like in this video, he’d lay there and wave his arms a little, coo happily, and entertain himself for a little while. It’s so cute!!
Pretty soon the arm would start waving slower and slower, and then down it would drop and he’d be out for the night!
He’ll sleep for a solid 6-8 hours too, before waking for his middle-of-the-night feed!
Now if we can just figure out how to get him to take his naps during the day, we’ll be golden!!
Any nap routine ideas for me??
